Synopsis: In 1952, there was a skirmish on the rooftop that led to the death of a maid at the Barbizon hotel for women also known as The Dollhouse. That’s what the rumor is, anyway. In present-day 2016, it is a renewed condo. Rose, a current resident at the condo, sets out to learn the truth after bumping into her suspicious neighbor.
Mini review: I am a sucker for an unsolved murder and the prime suspect living a floor below! The story is fast-paced and really tries to highlight the similarities and differences between then and now. The story focuses majorly on women in 1952 and what independence means to them.
1952 vs 2016. 2016 pales against the era of bebop and jazz, to be honest. Yes, it was tough for women and totally unfair to anyone wanting more than a marriage. The hotel made me think of modern-day hostels for women. It’s so normal today that I can’t believe it was a rare commodity. 1952 seemed to have more creative writing flowing into it than 2016. Maybe the research is the reason why.
There are two scenes I absolutely loved.
Next review drops on Sunday morning!
